Often called the Coastal Kōwhai it is a very hardy native plant that can tolerate dry and windy positions,  It is evergreen and  does not go through a juvenile tangle of shoots. Its larger leaves are more densely packed on the stems than other species, making it an excellent choice for various landscape designs.  A profusion of 3 cm long golden-yellow flowers appear  from August to November adding to its visual appeal.

It forms a small tree up to 6 metres tall and 4 metres wide.
