Ribes divaricatum Also known as coastal black gooseberry. This is thought to be a cross between a gooseberry and a black currant. The spiney stems at resemble a gooseberry and would make a good burglar proof hedge
The fruit can be eaten fresh or used for pies, jam or wine. The fruit are ready to harvest when they become a blackish-purple colour. Best crops come from cooler regions
They develop into a large bush but can be trained as a cordon or as a standard.
May be grown in either full sun or partial shade where soils are fertile, moist and free-draining. Frost hardy and deciduous. Rust resistant
Grows to approximately 2m both in height and width.
