A low-growing New Zealands national flower the kowhai. It has prolific deep-yellow flowers, almost hidden in the foliage in winter, earlier than S. microphylla or S. tetraptera. Great border planting for textural contrast and flowers. Attracts birds, and is reasonably fast-growing reaching its ultimate height of 2 metres after about 5 years. Trims well into a hedge. Evergreen. Hardy.
Suitable for the front of shrub borders or in containers. Full sun to partial shade. Hardy. Evergreen.
Plant in any reasonable well drained soil. Feed once a year planting food. Prune to shape after flowering.
